Comcast Field Service job tracking iPhone App

My Roll on project

My role was A contract UX Designer and UI Designer. I entered Comcast after the business goals were outlined and the application idea was in its infancy. Comcast knew what they wanted to accomplish but didn’t know how to get there. That is where I came in. I conducted worker and customer interviews. I also did some clickable prototyping for field studies. I created the visual language and material design. This is a native app.

What problem needed to be solved or what was the business goal?

Comcast wanted to build an app for the field service workers. The app was to track their location so customers could have an expectancy of arrival for an install or repair. The app tracked jobs, inventory, Produced a list of needed items for the job and checked to see if the service worker had the necessary inventory to do the jobs for the day. If not the app ordered the inventory from the warehouse for pick up and notified the worker.

What was the thought process?

The app tracked what type of job it was. Provided location and ETA. of the job. The app also gave workers resources on how to do a particular job. Resources were installation videos and docs provided by the company and co-workers. The app also tracked time on the job and listed coworkers. The app also tracked and let you see co-workers that are working in your area. I shadowed workers on the job during their routes and asked questions and took notes on what they thought was helpful or what would make their job easier. One thing that came out of that was automatic inventory tracking. If the workers logged what they used per job the app would keep the service truck stocked for the next job or weeks worth of jobs. Customer satisfaction is important to Comcast so I introduced a way for the system to notify customers of when the service worker would be at their house for the job. The current window for arriving would be anywhere from 2-6 hours. When a service company is scheduled to be at your house to work on something if you know a more exact time of arrival you can plan your day accordingly. Some people can not afford to take a half day off work.

What was done?

I introduced inventory and time and location tracking. I also introduced a text notification system that kept customers notified if their service worker was on time or running late and any other information about the job that was relevant. Like access to the side of house or attic, no dogs and other important information concerning the customer responsibilities. I also implemented a short service review that a customer could text in response to a job number and that review would be logged in the database for the job and company worker. The app also reminded the worker to upsell and send a survey. and ways to end a job on a good note with the customer. Sorta like politeness reminders

What were the results?

The result was an incline in positive customer service. Better inventory tracking. and less inventory waste and overstocking.

Iron Giant street art

This was my latest chalk street art painting done in December 2017. I participated in the Tempe Festival of the arts chalk art for the last three events. This event had a sponsor and created a theme of the event called “if I were a giant” to match their media campaigns.

We have three days from 8-5 to work on our art. I completed mine 4 hours before the deadline.

As I was working on my art people couple walk around and watch us and there were so many people that remembered the Iron Giant being one of their favorite shows or they just watched it or they grew up watching that show. I thought it was a big hit.

For this event, we are asked to submit a sketch of our idea. the first theme was “winter in Arizona so the following sketch I submitted was drawn on the iPad pro using Procreate. then a sponsor changed the theme at the last minute. the next two sketches were done for the new theme.

This street art was done in the spring of 2017 in Prescott Arizona. I had 2, 8 hour days to work on it. I completed it a couple hours earlier. There was no theme to this event so I wanted to do something that was out of the ordinary for me. when I paint I enjoy the challenges of glass and water. After completing the larger whale, I felt like the piece seems to me “boring” so I jumped on Pinterest and looked up whale photos and found one of a baby that would fit. That little extra element helped bring some action to the piece. I made both whales break the border of the background to give it a little dimension.
